Flores is the volcanic mountain on the island of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Exact location of this mountain in the village of strikes, District Flores, Ende. This mountain has three crater lakes on top. This lake is known as the Three Colors Lakes because it has three different colors, namely red, blue, and white. However, the colors are always changing with the passage of time. Now, the colors are brown, green, and black. Flores region has been determined to be a National Nature Conservation Area since February 26, 1992.
Flores is a combination word of "keli" which means “mountain” and the word "mutu" which means “boil”. According to local belief, the colors on the lake Flores has the meaning of each and have a very powerful force of nature and magical world.
Lake or Tiwu Flores in the top three sections corresponding to the color - the color that is in the lake. Black lake or “Ata Tiwu Mbupu " is a gathering place for the souls of parents who have died.
Black Lake - Tiwu Ata Mbupu believed to be the gathering place for spirits of the elderly.
Lake Brown - Tiwu Ata Polo, is gathering place of spirits soothsayer .
While the lake is green or " Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Fai " is a gathering place for the young people who have died.
How to get there : Flights to Maumere is a regular flight routes with
route Denpasar - Maumere - Kupang, where the route Denpasar towards Maumere be completed in about 1 hour 30 minutes, while Maumere to Kupang to within about 1 hour.
From Maumere (Sikka district) can be continue the journey by road which connects 149 km to the City of Ende.
Before arrive to the City of Ende, the first stop is Moni village within 83 km from Maumere. Then, the distance from the village of Moni to the mountain is 13 km. Finally, through a path of approximately 1 km to reach the lip of the three colors lakes on the crater of Kelimutu mountain.
There are public buses that serve the route with Ende-Maumere by using mini-bus type buses (diesel Colt). Moni village is the closest village to the mountain area of Flores, this village is a government-owned homestay Ende and there are also many homestays run by local people.
To be known by foreign tourist : This area discovered by Van Such Telen Lio, Mom Dutch citizen Mr. Lio, 1915. Its beauty is widely known after the Y. Bouman describes in his writings in 1929. Since then the foreign tourists started coming to enjoy the lake known as the armature for the local community. Those who came not only a lover of beauty, but also researchers who want to know the natural occurrence that`s very rare.
